Understanding Pitru Paksha
Pitru Paksha is a 16 day period in September-October for honoring ancestors, starting on the full moon and ending on the new moon of Bhadrapada. The origin of Pitru Paksha is linked to the Mahabharata story of Karna. Despite his many acts of charity, Karna neglected to honor his ancestors. After his death, he found no food in heaven, only gold and jewels. The gods informed him of his oversight and allowed him to return to earth for 15 days called Pitru Paksha to perform the necessary rituals and make amends.
Sanātana Dharma emphasizes a tradition called Sharad, which helps us honor and remember those who have passed away. During Pitru Paksha, it's believed that our ancestors visit the earthly realm. We show respect and gratitude by offering them nourishment. This includes a ritual where the first meal is given to the sacred Fire, and the second meal is shared with a Crow.
Why Fire?
Fire, one of the five elements, is the only visible element that naturally flows upward. It is said that our Pitars (ancestors) once approached Lord Brahma with concerns that the offerings made to them during Pitru Paksha were often too abundant, leaving them uncertain about how to receive everything. Brahma advised them to seek the help of Agni, the fire god, who agreed to accept the first meal offered during the rituals. From that moment on, it became customary to offer the first portion of food to the fire, ensuring that it reaches the ancestors in its purest form.

Why Crow?
According to ancient scriptures, Kaka Bhusandi was a wise crow who gained immense knowledge and wisdom over countless lifetimes. He is often portrayed as a first time traveler, witnessing the changes in the world and learning from different eras. Crows are also closely associated with Yama, the god of death and the afterlife. Yama is responsible for guiding souls to their next destination after death.

Importance of Rituals
Rituals have long been revered as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. In Vedic traditions, fire rituals (Homa/Hawan) hold profound significance—not only as sacred offerings but also as a means of energetic purification and liberation for both the living and the departed.
When someone passes away with unresolved desires or attachments, they may linger in subtle states—yearning, watching over their loved ones, or unable to move on. Shraddha rituals offer a way to gently release these ties. Through offerings of food, water, and heartfelt prayers, we nourish and guide our ancestors forward on their journey.
From a vibrational perspective, everything—including thoughts, emotions, and memories—holds energy. Fire, as a powerful and upward-moving force, helps dissolve lower energies and attachments that may bind a soul to the past. This act of transmutation allows grief and longing to transform into peace, clarity, and spiritual liberation.
When paired with Sanskrit mantras—pure sound vibrations—fire rituals become even more potent. Together, they release energetic bonds, aid the soul’s transition, and bring healing to those who remain. These are not merely rituals of remembrance, but sacred acts of love and responsibility—helping us stay connected with our ancestors while restoring spiritual balance in our own lives.
Crows are believed to be messengers between the seen and unseen worlds. Feeding them during Shraddha is a symbolic act, reflecting our belief that the offering has reached the ancestors when the crow accepts the food. This gesture mirrors a deeper spiritual truth: our love and intentions continue to connect us across realms, beyond the boundaries of time and form.
In essence, rituals are a sacred responsibility. When performed with love and intention, they heal the past, bless the future, and bring closure and peace to all involved.
